  5. Intel EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100+ adapters

  9. 82557 Ethernet Controller
  10. -------------------------

  12. The PRO/100+ PCI adapter uses the Intel 82557 high-
  13. performance Ethernet controller. You will see references to
  14. this component in other README files. Sometimes, the
  15. PRO/100B PCI adapter will be referred to as the "82557-based
  16. adapter."

  19. Full duplex support
  20. -------------------
  21.  
  22. Full duplex is an optional setting that can improve adapter
  23. performance.
  24.  
  25. To run the PRO/100+ PCI adapter at full duplex, you need to
  26. be connected to a full duplex switching hub.
  27.  
  28. If your TX hub supports auto-negotiation, the PRO/100+ TX
  29. adapter and hub will negotiate to select the best mode. If
  30. your TX hub does not support auto-negotiation, you need to
  31. manually change to full duplex. Refer to the Installation
  32. Guide or the "Duplex Support" README file for complete
  33. instructions.

  39. If using Microsoft's EMM386 memory manager, use EMM386
  40. version 4.49 or later. This version is included with DOS
  41. version 6.22.

  44. Busmaster slots
  45. ---------------

  47. You must install the adapter in a busmaster slot. If the
  48. driver fails to load or diagnostics fail, try moving the
  49. adapter to a different slot. If you're not sure if your
  50. slots are busmaster enabled, see your computer's
  51. documentation.

  54. PCI BIOS
  55. --------

  57. Make sure you're using the latest BIOS for your computer.
  58. See the help file called "PCI installation" under the
  59. "Adapter installation and special configurations" section
  60. for a list of phone numbers of the leading PCI computer
  61. manufacturers.

  64. PCI shared interrupts
  65. ---------------------

  67. The server and DOS ODI client drivers for the EtherExpress
  68. PRO/100+ PCI adapters support shared interrupts. However,
  69. because there is no industry-standard way to support shared
  70. interrupts, other adapters may support them differently, or
  71. not at all. You may notice this when you install the
  72. PRO/100+ PCI adapter or when you install another add-in PCI
  73. card at a later date.

  75. If you think you have another PCI adapter that doesn't
  76. support shared interrupts (for example, a SCSI adapter),
  77. contact its manufacturer for a shared interrupt driver. Or,
  78. try running your computer's CMOS Setup program to assign a
  79. different interrupt to the other adapter.

  82. Configuring your PCI BIOS
  83. -------------------------

  85. Some computers allow you to configure various BIOS
  86. parameters. If you have problems installing your adapter,
  87. run the BIOS setup program and, if possible, set these
  88. parameters:

  90.    Interrupt type:   level-triggered
  91.    
  92.    PCI slots:   enable
  93.  
  94. These should already be the default settings.

  97. Compaq Prolinea* Deskpro* XL
  98. ----------------------------

  100. To work with the EtherExpress PRO/10+ PCI LAN adapter, these
  101. two Compaq computers need updated BIOS software. You can
  102. download the necessary files from the Compaq website:

  106. From the Compaq home page, navigate to the Downloadable
  107. Files page. On this page, select the file that corresponds
  108. to your Compaq computer model. Follow the instructions
  109. provided by Compaq.

  112. NetWare 3.11 Servers
  113. --------------------
  114.  
  115. On NetWare 3.11 servers, the driver won't operate correctly
  116. unless you modify the server's STARTUP.NCF to include:
  117.  
  118. SET MAXIMUM PHYSICAL RECEIVE PACKET SIZE = 1536  (or larger)
  119.  
  120. This specifies the size for preallocated server buffers. See
  121. the NetWare 3.11 installation instructions for more details.

  124. Using LANDesk(R) Traffic Analyst 2.0
  125. ------------------------------------
  126.  
  127. If you're using LANDesk Management Suite 2.0 and a Novell
  128. DOS ODI client driver on your workstation, load RXMONSTK.COM
  129. (supplied by Novell) after loading LSL. Also, be sure you
  130. have updated VMON.386 dated 12-14-95 which supports the
  131. latest NetWare ODI client specification (v4.0). You can
  132. download the VMON.386 file from our website. Refer to the
  133. 'Using Intel's Automated Customer Support' README file on
  134. this disk for information.

  137. Use the drivers that come with this adapter
  138. -------------------------------------------

  140. Use the drivers that come with this adapter. The drivers for
  141. the prior version of this adapter (PRO/100) will not work.
  142. If you download an updated driver from one of our online
  143. services in the future, make sure it is for the PRO/100+ PCI
  144. adapter and not the PRO/100 PCI (non-B) version.

  147. SETUP
  148. -----

  150. Use SETUP.EXE utility on the Intel Configuration and Drivers
  151. disk to automatically install the DOS ODI driver, run
  152. diagnostics, get help with installation problems, and to
  153. view information and help files.

  155. You must use SETUP.EXE version 3.03 or later with this
  156. adapter. Previous version of SETUP.EXE will not work.
